Should I Hire a Custom Home Builder?
To start, there are other options than hiring a custom home builder:
- Renting a home/apartment
- Purchasing a preexisting home
- Building, but contracting the home yourself
Option 1 is okay but should only be for short term. Owning your own home is a dream for many people and has many advantages.
Option 2 is even better. In some cases, you can find an existing home that suits your needs. However, in most cases, it is not exactly the way that you want it, and maybe not the exact location that you desire.
Option 3 can be done by some people. However, this is risky. I tell people all the time that yes, you can do it but there are risks involved. You as a homeowner are going to pay higher material and labor costs. Sub-contractors are going to put you on the bottom of their list because they are going to work for their “bread and butter” first, the builder. Also, if you are not knowledgeable or experienced, the process can be a disaster. Lastly, most banks will not allow the homeowner to build it themselves because of the items mentioned above.
So, should you hire a custom home builder? I say absolutely. There are many very good custom home builders in our area. However, we recommend that you do your homework and due diligence and pick the best fit for you.
In short, we have summarized the blog post into some short points regarding why you should opt for a home builder:
- There is peace of mind knowing that someone experienced and knowledgeable is overseeing the entire project.
- You get to choose what you want your house to look like, rather than settling for a preexisting home.
- Most home builders, like CCH, take pride in their work and will implement good quality work that will deliver a superior finished project.
- Contractors will know the latest designs and techniques in the field.
- Most contractors have good connections and affiliates, leading to more affordable housing and tax abatement.
- The education that you can pick up through working with a contractor can be very valuable down the line.
- Contractors can provide you with other resources, such as a timeline, list of reputable subcontractors/vendors, etc.
We would love to be your contractor of choice.
