The American Dream is different for everyone, but most versions of it have the following: a great job, a stable income, a wonderful family, a golden retriever, and a beautiful home with a white picket fence to top it off. Most Americans desire this lifestyle, and it is something we look forward to for our children and ourselves. It makes it even better if your American Dream home is custom built to match every feature that you love.
That is the goal that we have here at Copeland Custom Homes. We our passionate about giving our customers the product that they deserve, and we are willing to go above and beyond to make that happen. So in other words, we are ready to help you pursue this part of the American Dream. The question for you is: are you ready to build a new home?
It is hard to say for sure, isn’t it?
Building a new home is a HUGE commitment and investment. It takes a lot more than just the desire or the vision of a great home life to make it happen. It is always wise to be cautious before taking the initial steps towards building a home because you never know where life could take you.
So with that being said, let’s look at some of the signs that we have identified as good indicators that you are ready to build a new house.
- Your personal finances are in a good place. Do you have a good credit score? How much debt do you have? Do you have an emergency fund built up? Do you have enough for a down payment?
- You have a sound budget in place. You should have a good idea of how much you are willing to spend on a house that includes some wiggle room for unforeseen issues or changes. Don’t ask yourself “How much does the home I want cost?” Instead, ask, “How much can I afford to put into a house?”
- You need a new home. It is good to sit down and discuss with your family the wants and needs of a future home. Not only will this help you budget, but it will also help you determine if building a home is the right move for you.
- You have the patience to build a home. Building a house should be a very enjoyable experience for everyone involved. However, it can be stressful for some people because of unforeseen issues, the time it takes for construction to complete, and disagreements between spouses on building preferences (paint color, plumbing fixtures, etc.).
- You are panning on staying in your home for at least three to five years. Houses should appreciate every year. However, if you sell within 2 years, you will have to pay capital gains tax. If you stay longer than that, you won’t have to. Also, the longer you stay the more the house will be worth when you do sell.
So there you have it. This is a checklist to run through before you decide to commit to building a new home. Run through this list and double check everything on your end (especially in regards to finances) so that you do not miss anything.
